Nik Hetherbrook (She/Her/Hers) | Counsellor and Psychosexual Therapist

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only work around sex and intimacy?

No, it is just an area I have experience in.

Do you work in person?

Not at the moment, it is something I would like to do, I just don't have the option right now.

Do you work with sex addiction?

There are some issues that could be considered sex addiction that I can work with after completing an assessment to ensure it is appropriate for me to do the work with you. But if you are unsure you can seek a therapist registered with The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity (ATSAC) who should be able to help, or I am happy to recommend someone.

Can I only come to you if I have experienced sexual violence?

No, whilst a lot of my experience is in that area, one of the reasons I started private practice is so that I could work more long-term with people who wanted to look at other elements of their life with a therapist who is equipped to manage if difficult experiences overlapped.

How long does therapy take and how often do I have to have sessions?

It can depend on what you would like to cover in sessions. There are differences from person to person, but many people find they are ready to end after 15-20 sessions. We will review regularly, ensuring you are still working towards what you would like to and gauging what you might notice when you are ready to end.
It is recommended to have weekly sessions to build momentum, trust and consistency.

Do I have to tell you absolutely everything?

Yes and No.
Yes - specifically to address sexual disruptions. I can offer space to help explore aspects of your sex life, including (but not limited to): painful penetration, erectile difficulty, mismatched desire, and premature ejaculation.
No - I am unable to offer support where there is relationship discord. I am happy to recommend relationship therapists if this is what you are looking for.

Do you work with couples?

No, and there may be things you wish to wait until you know me a bit better before you explore them in sessions. For this reason I always encourage you to decide what we focus on in the session, ensuring you can move at a pace that suits you and you have the opportunity to speak about what is important for you.

Is everything confidential?

Mostly.
I have a duty of care to consider safeguarding of children and adults, if you were to disclose that yourself or someone else has a serious risk that harm would come to them, I would have to ensure the appropriate support.
I have a comprehensive counselling agreement which would need to be read and signed before the first session which fully details confidentiality.
