Nik Hetherbrook (She/Her/Hers) | Counsellor and Psychosexual Therapist
So, Where do I even start?
The short answer is: with whatever feels important to you.
The longer answer is: In the first session we will look at why you are seeking therapy and decide some goals together.
Some of the most common themes I work with are:
A Genuine Collaboration
Processing and Finding Tools
Working Hollistically
A Space For Everyone
The personal issues that get stuck in our thoughts are rarely solved by only focussing on an isolated event. They can be tied to several parts of our history, impacting on our self-esteem, how we navigate the world and relate to other people.
I welcome people from all walks of life, and work with individuals or any sexuality, gender identity, or neurotype from any cultural background.
I am not here to tell you what to do. I believe Therapeutic work is a collaboration between us, allowing for autonomy, encourages growth, and self-discovery.
Any strategies, interventions or tools I suggest are an invitation rather than a necessity.
Throughout your therapy we work together to unpack whatever you wish to bring to the session, so that you can process and understand it and we can find tools and strategies to suit you.
What is a session like with me?
A calm presence, giving space to reflect, be heard and make your own choices.
Navigating the Past
Overcoming low self-worth, learning to be comfortable in your skin, and finding acceptance which can bloom into self compassion.
Self Esteem and Confidence
Exploring past incidences and family dynamics. The narratives/experiences you grew up with; finding your own voice and values within this and letting go of what is not yours.
What does life look like in the here and now? And what would you like to be different?
Boundaries
The Present
Learning how to identify your limits, communicate them, and take up space in your life.
And the sex stuff?
That usually comes under the working holistically part, some people don't talk to me about sex at all.
For those that would like to - Psychosexual therapy (PST) can give you the opportunity to explore many aspects of sexuality including (but not limited to):
Loss of desire, Pain during/after penetration, Unreliable erections or erectile dysfunction, Anxiety and emotional distress around sex and sexuality, Body Image issues, Exploring Sexuality, Reconnecting with your sexual self after sexual assault, and more.
PST usually includes structured tasks or exercises to undertake between sessions which clients are invited to engage in at home, at their own pace with to help them reconnect with sensations, their body and mind. There may also be psychoeducation to help you relate to yourself/ves and sex more comprehensively.
All psychosexual therapy is strictly talking therapy - there are no physical examinations or physical contact involved with the therapist at any point.
